        在国际上首先提出并实现了智能信息处理中时间聚类分析(TCA)的理论和方法并在近五年来脑功能影像研究领域里推广应用(Nature 2000);在双回波磁共振成像方面的工作,为功能磁共振信号生理基础提供了重要依据;在神经网络领域里的工作,即条件内区域连接相关分析(WICA),拓展了大脑平行处理时间分离的概念(Nature 1999),为后来在功能神经连接研究中的成功应用奠定了基础。曾先后主持了美国NIH、NSF、美国心脏协会及诸多私人基金会研究项目;主要包括新的功能磁共振成像分析处理方法和神经计算模型及其在神经科学及精神病学研究中的应用。其中,主持的两项研究项目获得美国国家精神病及情绪疾病研究协会(NARSAD)青年学者研究奖和独立研究学者奖。2007年,“智能信息处理-基于MRI的人脑神经通路计算模型”项目获中国自然科学基金委海外青年学者合作研究奖。在《Nature》杂志上以第一作者、同时也是通讯作者发表论文两篇,在美国科学院院刊《PNAS》 上作为通信作者发表论文一篇,一项国际专利。刘一军教授自2006年以来,与国内主要的功能神经影像研究单位开展了广泛的和实质性的合作;仅2009-2010年回国前一年已在本领域的SCI核心杂志上与国内合作发表论文23篇,为国内功能脑成像技术的临床应用起了巨大推动作用。

      近年来,主要致力于动态脑功能影像和神经网络分析处理的新方法和计算模型,其研究成果已成功应用在神经发育及精神障碍分析,成瘾的脑机制,肥胖脑机制,针灸的中枢神经机理,癫痫的发病机制等领域。
